Due to financial constraints, Rohit was raised by his grandparents and uncles in Borivali, while his parents and younger brother lived in a single-room house in Dombivli. Despite these hardships, Rohit’s talent in cricket was evident from a young age. He started playing cricket in a local club with the help of his uncle and coach Dinesh Lad, who recognized his potential and provided him with the necessary support and guidance.

In the beginning of the cricket career, Rohit liked to bowl as an off-spin but bat a little bit. However, his coach, Dinesh Lad, find out his batting spark and promoted him into an upper batting order in a Harris Shield game. He scored a century in this game which helped him to be selected for the Mumbai Under-20 team and eventually the Indian team.
